On his latest trip to Macau, spanning three days, Zhang Dejiang, a prominent figure in the Chinese government, vowed to back the area’s economic advancement and diversification initiatives. He stressed the importance of Macau reducing its dependence on gambling and investigating alternative growth sectors. To achieve this, he guaranteed greater assistance from the national government, such as simplified visa procedures to enhance tourism and economic connections with mainland China.
Addressing a gathering, Zhang commended Macau’s progress since its handover to China in 1999 and laid out its future “strategic direction.” He recognized that Macau is at a pivotal point in its development.
Although he refrained from directly mentioning the gaming sector, the underlying message clearly encouraged Macau to broaden its economic base. The administration envisions Macau transforming into an international leisure and tourism destination, reducing its reliance on casinos.
Notwithstanding these endeavors, gambling continues to play a major role in Macau’s economy. Official figures indicate that gambling revenue remains strong, constituting a significant share of the regions GDP.
