The top financial official in Boston is advocating for making online lottery games legal.
Deborah Goldberg, who manages Massachusetts’ finances, thinks that legalizing online sports wagering should also open the door for internet lottery operations.
A short time ago, the state’s lawmakers appeared ready to give the green light to online sports betting within their latest economic growth legislation.
An early version of the bill seemed to include online lottery as well, but it would also divert a substantial amount of tax breaks, potentially up to $3 billion, from these expanding sectors, leading some to hesitate.
Concerns emerged regarding the distribution of tax income from various industries, and as of July 31st, a finalized economic development bill remained absent.
Therefore, while the legalization of online sports betting appears highly likely, the future of online lottery remains uncertain. Despite this, Goldberg maintains optimism about the potential for legal iLottery in Massachusetts.
She stated:
“The Legislature’s exploration of new avenues to generate consistent income for the Commonwealth this session was encouraging. With sports wagering nearing legalization, I anticipate collaborating with the Legislature to ensure the Lottery is not overlooked.”
“Should lawmakers reconvene in the autumn to finalize an economic development package, I urge them to permit the Lottery to offer its products digitally. We are equipped to implement a secure and dependable iLottery system with the capacity to generate substantial, much-needed revenue for the Commonwealth – potentially surpassing revenue from sports betting.”
Legislators in the Bay State are preparing for intense political negotiations. Those in charge are seeking consensus on major issues such as fiscal allocations and contentious new regulations, but all parties anticipate a protracted and contentious debate.
