The Australian media regulator, ACMA, is taking strong measures against unlawful wagering. In an unprecedented move, they’ve directed Australian internet service providers to restrict access to thepokies.net, a platform they allege amassed significant profits by illicitly providing online casino options to Australians.
The ACMA approximates that roughly 30,000 Australians frequented the site monthly, and they’ve fielded more grievances about thepokies.net than any other unauthorized gambling platform this year. Individuals recounted substantial monetary losses and claimed the site declined to honor deposits and payouts.
ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin emphasized that restricting access to such platforms conveys a clear message that the ACMA will act to disrupt illicit operators targeting Australian citizens.
This isn’t the initial instance of the ACMA taking action against unlawful wagering platforms. Since 2017, they’ve compelled 160 illicit gambling operations to withdraw from the Australian market. In addition to thepokies.net, the ACMA is also striving to block access to numerous other platforms, including Azure Hand, Abo Casino, Betroom, 777Bay, Space Lilly, Jet Casino, Katsu Bet and Winz.
Authorities are taking a hard line against illicit online wagering platforms. They are collaborating with internet service providers to restrict access, pursuing operators with focused legal action, and endeavoring to inform the public about the dangers. As Superintendent Olorine stated, “Should these platforms opt to retain your funds, a frequent occurrence as we are aware, there are no recourses available to you.”
